AI Generated Face-swap Porn Banned, New Technology Promises Havoc

Internet giants including Pornhub, Twitter and Reddit are banning the posting of a new type of AI-generated porn called ‘deepfakes’.

‘Deepfakes’ began breaking in technology news in December 2017, where it instantly engendered controversy. Stemming originally from a community on Reddit, ‘deepfakes’ involves using AI algorithms to convincingly overlay someone else’s face over a pre-shot video clip. Reddit users have primarily applied this technology to pornography, where they have attempted to overlay faces of Hollywood celebrities onto adult performers in x-rated videos.

In short order many large internet platforms including Twitter and PornHub banned the material, citing it as a non-consensual production and a violation of their terms of service. Reddit held out longer, but announced today that it, too, is banning ‘deepfakes’ material.

While this particular application of ‘deepfakes’ technology may be disturbing and tasteless, the technology itself raises a myriad of deeper, even more unsettling issues. While not yet perfected, the system will likely soon be able to produce faked video content that could be indistinguishable from genuine footage. Furthermore, the technology is readily accessible to the above-average tech user. The possibilities for deceptive application of this technology will truly only be limited by imagination. Deceptive actors could potential produce anything from falsified footage of political leaders to scamming a grandmother by stealing her grandson’s face on Skype.

A safe-for-work application of the ‘deepfakes technology can be found in the below video:
