FDA Approves AI That Predicts Death
An AI system that can accurately predict the likelihood of (otherwise) unexpected death has been approved by the FDA for medical use.
…integrated system of hospital workstations and digital medical records that includes real-time data on [patients’] physiology, past medical history, family history, medications, age, etc. With all this information, the AI can automatically calculate the risk of patient deterioration up to six hours in advance of when a doctor might notice.
This work is similar to a recent AI study by Stanford university that was able to predict when a terminally ill patient might die with a 90% degree of accuracy. While 90% is not 100%, it is still likely much better performance than most human doctors. After all, AI does not need to be perfect: it just needs to be better than us.
