First Cryptojacking Software Found in SCADA System
Infrastructure security firm Radiflow announced that it has discovered cryptojacking software running on monitoring and control systems for a water utility in Europe. This is the first time that cryptomining malware has been found in a SCADA system.
The malware is fairly sophisticated, being
…built to run quietly in the background, using as much processing power as it could to mine the cryptocurrency Monero without overwhelming the system and creating obvious problems. The miner was also designed to detect and even disable security scanners and other defense tools that might flag it.
The presence of widespread, intelligent malware in industrial control systems raises serious questions of safety. It’s easy to imagine that other, less stable malware in a similar situation could accidentally disable the computer system it is trying to compromise, resulting in instability or destruction of the industrial resources it controls.
