Salon.com Forces Ad-blocking Users to Mine Crypto

Online magazine Salon.com is now forcing ad-blocking users to help mine cryptocurrency in order to view their website.

Starting today, the popular tabloid-like publication is giving users two choices if they want to use the site: disable ad-blocking or let Salon.com use your CPU to mine Monero. The site claims it is to help recuperate ad revenue lost in the wake of popular ad-blocking browser plugins. The script Salon is using is powered by Coinhive, the same software popular with hackers and cryptojackers.

It is interesting that a mainstream web presence like Salon would choose to use this method to generate revenue, given Coinhive’s notoriety and Monero’s association with hackers and criminals. It also raises the spectre of whether or not this may become a more widespread trend among media driven websites like Salon.
